City Bike Magazine Collection

From 2010 until 2015, lead designer Alan Lapp provided a complete graphic-design solution for CityBike, a venerable 30-year-old motorcycle magazine. Lapp was faced with a daunting challenge: how to produce monthly issues with limited resources, including lack of full-color printing. How to make the magazine look fresh and current while highlighting its old-school vibe?

“Alan Lapp did an amazing job,” said Gabe Ets-Hokin, CityBike’s co-publisher and editor-in-chief from 2009 to 2014. “Since he did the work of an entire art and ad department, there is no way we could have produced a monthly free magazine profitably without Al’s hard work and dedication to the magazine and its mission. His template was a textbook blend of efficiency and flexibility, but Al was always game to carry out my goofy ideas. I loved the cover of the 30-year commemorative issue, intended to look like the first one from 1984, or my favorite, the issue styled after a 1970’s Marvel comic book.”

Al produced 64 monthly issues of CityBike before art direction was moved in-house in 2015.
